What Should I Expect in My First Jiu-Jitsu Class?

What are the Rules of Jiu-Jitsu Class?

Most jiu-jitsu schools have the rules posted either inside or outside of the facility. Make sure you follow them to the letter. All students must remain disciplined and respectful of the coach and each other. Everyone is there to learn, so you don’t want to cause disruptions that interrupt the training of others.

It’s tradition to bow to the center when entering and exiting the mat. Start class by bowing respectfully to the instructor. Once you receive it, wear your uniform to each class. Make sure you are on time for each session so that you do not cause unnecessary delays. Clip your nails and remove any piercings before attending class. You don’t want to injure your opponent accidentally.  

What are the Belts Available in Jiu-Jitsu

The progression for belts in jiu-jitsu school is as follows for adults:

  • White — Beginning practitioner
  • Blue — Next adult rank, takes at least two years to earn
  • Purple — Practitioners must hold a purple belt for at least 1 ½ years before advancing
  • Brown — Practitioners must hold a brown belt for at least one year before advancing
  • Black — Practitioners must be at least 19 years old before earning this belt

For children, the color progressions are:

  • White
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Green

These belt levels are used until a student reaches the age of 16. Your progression through each belt level depends on the skills you develop and your commitment to the discipline. Gaining a new belt involves a lot of live sparring, participating in competitions, and learning new techniques.
